The new Nikon COOLPIX W300 waterproof camera is an update to Nikon’s previous waterproof point-and-shoot camera, the AW130. Like its predecessor, the W300 boasts a rugged overall design but adds the ability to shoot 4K video.

In addition, Nikon improved the grip design, which in combination with the fairly large buttons, makes the W300 the best rugged camera if you plan to wear gloves. Of course, it’s also one of our overall 7 best waterproof cameras for 2017.

Finally, the W300 brings Bluetooth as a new connectivity option to your smartphone or tablet.

Let’s take a closer look.

Nikon COOLPIX W300 Features Review

The large 3-inch screen helps frame shots while the dedicated video recording button makes shooting video easy.

The Nikon COOLPIX W300 uses a 16-megapixel CMOS back-side illuminated (BSI) sensor along with an F2.8–4.9 aperture lens with 5x optical zoom and optical image stabilization.

The W300 is waterproof down to 100 feet, freeze proof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit, dustproof and shockproof to drops as high as 7.9 feet.

The overall ruggedness of the W300 is enviable — it has one of the best builds in this class of waterproof camera.

The video mode will now shoot up to 4K UHD — that’s 3840×2160 at 30 frames per second (fps). We’re actually more pleased to have the Full HD 1080p option boosted to 60 fps because it’s a very usable setting for most people, delivering a great blend of quality to file size.

The W300 also has a built-in GPS to keep track of your location, as well as keep track of your depth or height above sea level (altimeter). A new Active Guide function quickly shows you this data.

The straightforward top makes it easier to use the W300 when you’re wearing gloves.

The W300 will connect to your smartphone via built-in WiFi or Bluetooth with the Nikon SnapBridge app, which lets you transfer, share photos and videos or use your smartphone as a remote control.

All-in-all, if you’ve been looking for a rugged waterproof point-and-shoot camera that has a built-in optical zoom — which most smartphones and action cameras do not have — it’s hard to go wrong with the Nikon COOLPIX W300.

Disclosure: Reviews and Gear Links:

In addition to Man Makes Fire buying gear for reviews and guides, gear manufacturers occasionally ship review units to Man Makes Fire. If we like it, we spend some quality time with the gear and review it, noting if it was provided to Man Makes Fire. After the review, we return it, give it away, or work on longer-term review follow-ups when applicable to reader interest.

We do not accept any gear in exchange for coverage. If we do not truly appreciate the gear, we don't write about it at all -- bad gear will fade into obscurity on its own if everyone ignores it. In addition, we focus on gear from reputable companies, reputable brands, and reputable retailers we trust.

The gear links on Man Makes Fire are focused on what we are willing to recommend to our own family and friends. Many of our specific gear links connect to industry-standard affiliate advertising programs. When you buy something using the retail links in our guides and reviews, we may earn a small affiliate commission that helps pay for our work.

Basically, we deliver the advice and insight you need, you get the gear you want, and then everyone wins. Pretty straightforward.
