Can’t Sharpen a Knife? Two Razor Edge Knife Systems Save the Day

I’ve tried to sharpen knives, but I’m not good at it. Sure, as I attempt to hold the perfect angle against a stone and shave away fine bits of hardened steel, I make the blade marginally sharper than when I started but never sharp like it should be.

I want to learn how to sharpen a knife properly, but I can’t seem to find the time — there’s always something more pressing to do, a hunt to plan, a fishing trip, a ride along the river.

How Razor Knives Work

Both of these knives come with a special set of razor blade edges that can be attached to the folding knife, used until dull, then swapped out for a fresh sharp blade. Think about your average utility knife transformed into a hunting knife.

The Havalon Piranta line of knives come in a variety of colors, with and without cases, but they share a common thin surgically-sharp blade style. They are lightweight, and frankly, look vaguely wicked. They have, however, gained a solid following of enthusiasts who sing their praises and often call them “crazy sharp.” The BOLT model uses thicker, stronger “60A” blades than previous models.

Both of these knifes are primarily designed for skinning, quartering, and caping deer, elk, and other big game, but they can certainly be used for more more domestic work, like slicing open a bag of jerky.
