The Jack Wolfskin JWP Vest is a lightweight, windproof puffy vest with synthetic insulation made from recycled fibers.
To get us a closer look, Jack Wolfskin sent Man Makes Fire a review unit. After testing the JWP Vest during the review process, this what we learned:
JWP Vest Review
A good lightweight puffy vest is both an item of fashion as well as a workhorse layer for outdoor adventurers. I like down vests and synthetic puffy vests because they’re great in the fall and spring for hikes that have an edge of chill in them. I also like puffy vests because they’re great when you’re out having a beer that ends up on an outside patio after the sun goes down.
Puffy vests are also a must-have cold-weather layer. Vest are particularly good because they give you a boost of warmth without restricting arm movement.
Enter the Jack Wolfskin JWP Vest.
Jack Wolfskin is a European brand that’s very popular in Germany. The company has opened a new US-focused online store in an effort to expand its range. Like The North Face in the United States, customers choose Jack Wolfskin for both its urban style as well as its actual outdoor performance. (If you want to learn more about Jack Wolfskin, check out my JWP Shell Rain Jacket Review.)
For insulation, Jack Wolfskin uses its MICROGUARD ECOSPHERE, which is made from recycled synthetic polyester fibers. The shell is made from a recycled polyester — Jack Wolfskin’s STORMLOCK ECOSPHERE 20D RIPSTOP.
Like many large outdoor clothing brands, Jack Wolfskin has developed its own versions of fabrics, waterproof/breathable fabrics, and insulations. While their names are less familiar here in the United States, they seem to perform well compared to similarly constructed competition.
The JWP Vest is supple, somewhat puffy and warm.
Fit & Style
The JWP Vest is part of Jack Wolfskin’s PACK AND GO! collection, which means it’s designed for active travel and spur-of-the-moment adventures. Characteristics include minimalist, lightweight designs.
For the JWP Vest, the result is straightforward: A midweight puff for insulation, two zippered hand pockets, two interior stash pockets, and a windproof shell.
The fit is accurate to typical European sizing norms: The JWP Vest fits a bit trim compared to typical North American-focused vests and apparel.
For reference, I’m about 6’3″ and 220 pounds. I typically wear XL tops. The JWP Vest in XL gives me a nice trim fit that works well over a t-shirt, merino base layer, or over a fleece long-sleeve shirt. It’s a bit tight over a heavier hoody or thick winter sweater.
Overall Quality
The Jack Wolfskin quality is very good. Zippers are smooth and engage easily. Seams are straight with tight stitching. The shell and liner fabric is smooth and supple and layers easily.
The JWP Vest has a very slight crinkle sound that comes from inside the vest that likely comes from the windproof layer. It’s not annoying and is comparable to other synthetic, slick puffies.

Competitive Alternatives & Options
If you’re considering the Jack Wolfskin JWP Vest, there are many competitive lightweight vest options available that might also meet your needs — or frankly, your color style preferences:
The North Face ThermoBall Eco Vest 2.0 — Like the JWP Vest, the ThermoBall Eco Vest 2.0 uses 100% recycled fabrics, a midweight synthetic insulation, and a slim fit. One key design difference is the square quilted insulation pattern.
Patagonia Nano Puff Insulated Vest — The Patagonia Nano Puff Insulated vest is a bit lighter than the JWP Vest. It features a brick quilt stitch pattern and is made from recycled material. There are two benefits that differentiate it from the JWP Vest: The Nano Puff Insulated Vest has an interior chest pocket that doubles as a stuff sack and the hem is drawcord adjustable.
L.L.Bean PrimaLoft Packaway Vest — The biggest benefit to the L.L.Bean PrimaLoft Packaway Vest is its size options — L.L.Bean offers both Regular and Tall options, which lets you dial in the fit. Like the Patagonia Nano Puff Insulated Vest, the L.L.Bean vest packs into its chest pocket. Fit is also slightly trim. For a thicker, puffier option, try the L.L.Bean Mountain Classic Down Vest, which is in our guide to the Best Gifts for Outdoor Lovers for its classic good looks.
Feathered Friends Eos Down Vest — For ultimate warm puffy awesomeness, go with the Feathered Friends Eos Down Vest. It’s packed with a thick dose of ultra high-quality 900+ fill power ethically sourced goose down. The Eos Down Vest fit is similar to the JWP Vest — just a bit trim.
The Bottom Line
All-in-all, the Jack Wolfskin JWP Vest is a trim, stylish, lightweight synthetic vest. It delivers a classic horizontal puffy stitch design that looks good over the top while holding warmth in. The price to value ratio is excellent — and quite a bit less than some popular North American-focused competitors. Highly recommended.
